My two friends Mike Burroughs and Riley Stair teamed up to make http://protomachine.com/ which is an incredible shop where they are building some of the craziest cars out there so I went down there to get some help welding on some reinforcement plates to help with opening the camper. There were always going to be challenges with opening and closing this camper and I’m still working out a few of those kinks, this is where Riley and Mike come in. The way we had the post mounts initially were a temporary solution and I knew that the thin 1/8” aluminum lid wasn’t gonna stand up to the torque of opening the lid so I enlisted them to mock up and weld on some 3/16” aluminum braces onto the outer corners of the back of the camper.
There was some planning to do though because you have to weld aluminum so hot we needed to be careful not to damage the tent or any of the internal structure of the habitat top (there was a change we could have delaminated the floor/core which is a thick honeycomb) so with some leather as a barrier and copper as a heatsink on the lid Riley got to work welding.
They whipped these up in no time and they work so much better I feel much more comfortable opening and laying up there now! If you’re in So Cal and need some custom work/fab definitely give these guys a call!
